Snares, sneers and sexism
So the other day I view this youtube.com video of two drummers doing a “drum off”, how amazing an event that the fans can finally decide who is the better musician or band one on one instead of arguing with friends about which one sucks more. Festivals like can do the same as well. After watching Janet Weiss (sleater-kinney and Quasi) face off with Sara Lund (independent Drummer) at an opening of a drum shop in Portland it made me think of past and recent incidents where the guys trash the girl bands. Many male friends would like the sound of the majority “girl band” but once they found out it was an all female line-up their faces would contort towards this lame eh they are ok but not awesome face. In actuality they can hang with the best of ‘em. It made me wish that both of these drummers could challenge the males to prove a point. I have lost competitions to females in the past and I didn’t go crawling disgracefully into some burrow in embarrassment, instead I was just in aw of talent. My favorite drummer is Kate Schellenbach from Luscious Jackson, as a cohesive talent they are awesome and when you break down those musicians into their inherent passions you can find their real talent or their individual style. She also started off as a drummer for the Beastie Boys, an all male act backed by a female drummer which is rare even in music today. Why do musicians seemed to be predetermined by gender and ethnicity; such as blacks play bass, whites play guitar, a fusion (all ethnic groups) amongst the other instruments, and the ladies sing and dance on stage with a tambourine as far as in the United States. Then there are popular drummers like Meg White (white Stripes) that relatively cater to their band’s groove. So my point is look at these videos blindly and tell me what you think.
